Richard Lilley has been leaving his mark on glass in the Berks County area for the last 25 years. Born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, his major interest has always been art. His first formal studies in art took place in high school commercial art courses. After graduation, his first studio and gallery was set-up in St. Peter's Village, Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he pursued oil painting and string art.

The need to subsidize his earnings led him to bartending at the former White Bear Inn and subsequently taking part in remodeling the former Beckersville Hotel into The Post Office Inn, now known as Emily's Pub. It was here that Richard did his first sand-etched designs on glass. He returned to the Philadelphia area, after four years at The Post Office Inn, and attended the Barnes Foundation School of Horticulture during the day, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at night where he studied oil painting.

Although the diverse field of sand-etched glass has become his specialty, his deep love for oil painting prevails. He treats each piece of etching as one of fine art which is extensively researched and custom designed for each client.

A close look around the Berks County area will show a variety of Richard Lilley's work. His newest work appears at the new Jimbo's Steaks & Hoagies in Muhlenberg Township and is a tribute to the Reading Fairgounds and Racing days of old. Other works appear in the Best Western Dutch Colony Inn & Suites, Chat-A-While Inn, Morgantown Hotel, Mulligan's, Bixlers Lodge, West Reading Tavern, Mt. Penn Family Restaurant, The Crab Barn, Santino's and Cafe Waldorf. This last location is by far one of his most intricate and extensive, consisting of five windows in a pirate motif. His work can also be found in many private homes in the area and has appeared in Berks County Living Magazine.

Richard has teamed with Muhlenberg Architect David M. Kleckner on several projects in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Jimbo's Steaks & Hoagies and Mulligan's (Berks County), Collegeville Diner (Collegeville), and Happy Day's Diner (Thorndale). A stunning mural on Granite is at the new Philly Diner (Essington).

The Lancaster area and beyond is also becoming decorated with Richard's designs as Eastern Resources, a restaurant equipment and design firm, collaborated with projects at the Conestoga Bar & Restaurant, Leola Family Restaurant and the Pressroom in the Lancaster area; several Original Italian Pizza Restaurants, Bonanza - Shamokin, Agolino's West Pittston, Lewisburg Social Club, Conti Inn - Doylestown, Cinnamon & Cream - Mifflinburg, Ponderosa in Knoebel's Park, and Baker's - Dillsburg, and Millie's Diner in Delaware.

The Reading Berks Guild & the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen have both bestowed upon Richard the status of Juried Craftsman. He has been greatly influenced by the professionalism and enthusiasm of the members of the Guilds, and this has been reflected in his work. He works with many contractors in the Berks County area and has teamed with B&G Glass Service, Inc. for 25 years.
